Quick Facts About Title IX
Signed into law by Richard
Nixon, Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 states:
No person in the United States
shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, denied
the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational
program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.
If not for
Title IX:
- We would not have some of
the countrys best coaches.
- Many of the fabulous players
over the past 25 years would not have been recruited by, able to attend,
or had a team to play on at Stanford.
- The level of play would
not be where it is today, and many of our players would never have developed
their potential.
- We would not see little girls growing up with athletic role models,
seeing competitiveness and athleticism as positive traits.
- Girls from elementary through high school would not have interscholastic
teams to play on.
- There might not be team athletic trainers or managers.
- The team would not have been able to travel out of state, much less
out of the country.
- There would not be an NCAA championship for women.
- The 1989-90 team would not have played, much less defeated #2 Tennessee
en route to a 32-1 National Championship season.
- The team would still be buying their own shoes and warm-ups.
- The team would still be playing in Roble Gym.
