Overall Team Accomplishments

We have touched the surface on each of the last 25 seasons of Stanford women's basketball. There were some up times and some down times, but overall the accomplishments were both numerous and glamorous. First, the basics -- 500 wins and just 219 losses. That's an average of 20 wins and less than 10 losses per season - an annual record that any program in America would dearly love to attain over such a lengthy period of time.

In 25 years, the Stanford women's basketball program has played post-season ball a total of 16 times. In the first seven years,Stanford reached post season play in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) three times. Beginning in '81-'82, Cardinal teams have reached the NCAA playoffs a total of 13 more times, including a remarkable 12 consecutively, beginning with the 1987-88 season to the present. That's 13 NCAA post-season appearances in a possible 18 years of NCAA play.

In the 1990's alone, no team reached the Women's Final Four more so than Stanford. They reached it six times ('90, '91, '92, '94, '95, and'96). Stanford won the NCAA title in 1990 and 1992. Once again, only Tennessee has won more.

In conference play, it took awhile for Stanford to win a championship - first doing so in 1988-89, with a perfect 18-0 mark. That PAC 10 title would be the first of many. The Cardinal racked up PAC 10 titles in'89, '90, '91, '92, '93, '95, '96, '97, and '98 - totaling nine in the past 11 years. Prior to that, Stanford had competed in an alphabet soup of conferences, including the NCIAC (for three years), the NCAC (for five years), the WCAA (for three years), and the PAC-West (for one year).

Stanford women's basketball has achieved at a very high level for a very long time. Inherent in those achievements are all the championships and the slew of team and personal awards. However, the best of all are the intangibles, such as the rewarding friendships that are destined to last a lifetime. Ask the coaches. Ask the players. Ask the managers. Ask the administrative staff. "What do you remember most about your Stanford basketball experience?" Most, if not all, will say their teammates. When you go through the blood, sweat, and tears of a basketball season with a group of people, all with the same goal of being the best, you form a special bond. Year in and year out, Stanford finds extraordinary women who bring so much more to the team than just a jump shot.

No matter the era. No matter the coach. The impressions of Stanford women's basketball are one and the same. Memorable basketball and lasting friendships.
